Candidate Photoshoot

My friend asked me and Charlotte were if we could do a photoshoot consisting of head shots for his campaign to become the new Student Union President. When we met up at the start of the shoot, James knew that he wanted to shoot outside and have some sort of texture in the background. This gave us the idea to shoot at the Sion Hill Campus of Bath Spa University. The equipment we used for the shoot was a D810 as well as taking out a Metz instead of a Gemini kit due to the practically of being able to move quickly if we were to change the location of the shoot. Unfortunately when we first got the camera it didn't have enough battery life due to the last person that used it, but luckily I was able to get a more decently charged battery for the camera to be able to do this shoot. Once we had the equipment issues out of the way, we used the bushy tree at the front of the university to give texture to the background of the photograph. When taking the photographs we made sure that there was room for cropping it to suit the part of the campaign it would be used for.

This is the original shot taken on the D810. The only thing with the background choice is that there would have to be a decent amount of post production editing to the shot to make the hair stand out a bit more from the background as well as stopping the very high contrast from the darkness of the background shadows and the brightness of the highlights on the skin and clothing.

Due to the sun being in the model's face, we had to move slightly to the right of the bush a little away from the direct sunlight. This didn't change the photographs too much, it was just the background had a lot more shadows to it.

The next area around Sion Hill we shot at, was still out the front of the campus but slightly to the side not far from one of the side entrances. The choice in this location was due to showing the location that was chosen to have these shots (Sion Hill) rather than shooting them at the more commonly chosen areas at Newton Park. The way in which the building in the background helps to fill the space around the model works well, especially with the role in which he is running for. Having different campuses in his campaign would give him insight into his manifesto.

The use of the backdrops for these photographic images contribute to the use of the images by showing that James is involved with wanting to get Sion Hill and other campus's involved.
